Birding in Sri Lanka

Endemics, owls & rainforest

Sri Lanka's endemic birds are packed into an island you can cross in a day. We time every morning for the flocks and every evening for the owls.

Why Sri Lanka for birds

From blue magpies to bay owls, in a single trip

Sinharaja's mixed-species feeding flocks are one of the great birding experiences in Asia. Between about 6:30 and 9am, dozens of species move through the canopy together, with the Sri Lanka blue magpie, grey hornbill and spot-winged thrush among them.

Around them is a rich cast of owls and nightbirds: frogmouths roosting in pairs, the chestnut-backed owlet, scops owls in tree hollows, and the elusive Serendib scops owl. Add the highland endemics of Horton Plains and the migrant-filled lagoons of the south coast, and a week can be extraordinary.

Our birding is photography-led: patient, positioned for the light, with local experts who know individual territories.
